After 122 Days
Thanks to everyone who tried out my visual novel and thought it was good enough to leave a review; I really appreciate it! Your ratings made my day!
Dr. Avner is my first official visual novel that I created all by myself. Honestly, I think it turned out pretty poorly. I can’t even bring myself to read what I wrote because it feels like it lacks personality and flow. The characters aren’t quite what I wanted them to be, and I missed some important elements I wanted to include.
For a game made in just 72 hours, it’s decent, I guess? I was really sleep-deprived while making it, so maybe I thought it was better at the time. But after getting some rest and hydrating, I realize how inexperienced and dull it actually is. I’m proud that I released it, but I wish it reflected more of what I’m capable of.
I definitely want to create more visual novels! I have a lot of ideas that I’m eager to explore. To do that, though, I need to improve my writing, and that’s what I’m focusing on.
So, what have I been up to since releasing Doctor Avner?
I’ve been busy making drawings for a game called The Rerooting of an Asphodel, which I’m working on with my friend and co-owner of our game dev studio, The Breezy Sloth Studios. We decided to team up since we have so many games we want to create together.
I’m also working on my own projects and recently started using RPG Maker. I want to bring more of the one hundred ideas swirling around in my head to life. I just wish I was better at expressing them!
What I want to do:
I want to remake Dr.Avner and show more of these characters, I'm planning to go back to working on them next year and make a year long project with them, but before doing that I want to release at least one of the ongoing projects I have, I also hope to get into more jams and do more coding next year since I really like doing that.
My Ideas for Dr. Avner:
The story takes place in a world ravaged by war and famine, where poverty is widespread and death is common. The new leaders of this world have decided to pass a law that takes away the human rights of criminals.
I want to explore themes like human rights, morality, and the balance between reason and emotion. Emotions are important and often have logical reasons behind them.
In this story, we have two very different main characters. Dr. Avner is a poor man who grew up hungry, but he was surrounded by people who genuinely cared for him. Because of their love and support, he developed a strong desire to meet their expectations, which unfortunately led him to become someone who struggles to make decisions and deal with the consequences of his choices.
On the other hand, there’s Martyr, a wealthy boy whose every move was closely monitored and judged. His life was meticulously planned out, making him feel more like a machine than a person. He craves some control, whether it's over his own life or the people beneath him.
Though they represent opposing perspectives, both Avner and Martyr understand that the world is harsh and that people can be the real monsters. Avner chooses to see the good in others, while Martyr refuses to do so. If he accepted that good exists, he would have to face the fact that he is responsible for his own actions and that every day he chooses not to change is a choice he makes, not because life is hard, but because he isn't living up to his potential.
As the story unfolds, their relationship becomes complicated and toxic, leading to some dramatic events.
The visual novel will feature a linear storyline with two possible endings and some branching dialogue for added background. In the final version, I plan to introduce more characters and delve deeper into the dystopian world I've created, as I have a strong affection for that genre.
I want to take my time creating this visual novel and plan everything carefully. I want it to be something I can feel proud of, even if it doesn’t get a lot of attention or recognition. I just want to look at it and think, “You did it! You created something!”
I'm not sure what else to say right now, so here are some links to some things.
